The Office of International Initiatives kicked off the summer with a Smoothie Social to celebrate over 150 students from the Georgia State University Summer Institute and Global Ambassador Program. This year, the Summer Institute is made up of international students from Turkey, China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. The international students take classes at Georgia State and are partnered with a Global Ambassador Program student. Global Ambassador Program students serve as cultural liaisons between the Summer Institute’s international students, Georgia State and downtown Atlanta.

Georgia State University Statement On Immigration Executive Order

ATLANTA, GEORGIA – To the Georgia State Community:  You are no doubt aware that on January 27, President Trump issued an executive order suspending entry into the United States of nationals from seven countries, as immigrants and nonimmigrants, for 90 days. We are working closely with the University System of Georgia and federal authorities as we seek a fuller understanding of the ramifications of the executive order and its implementation. Included below is a message from University System of Georgia (USG) Chancellor Steve Wrigley, as well as a link to details from the U.S. State Department.

The President’s executive order is impacting students, faculty, and staff at universities across the U.S., including at least one Georgia State student who appears to have been kept from boarding her flight to Atlanta. Our International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) office is in contact with the student, and we urge any member of the Georgia State community who is affected by the executive order to contact OISS at isss@gsu.edu404-413-2070, or in person at 252 Sparks Hall. The office will be able to answer questions, provide updated information and offer advice on travel plans.

America’s higher education system has long been recognized as the best in the world, and our colleges and universities have attracted outstanding students and scholars from around the world. Georgia State alone draws students from more than 160 nations, and an ambitious global agenda is one of the five major goals in our strategic plan.

I want to assure each of you that we place great value on the many international students and scholars who make Georgia State a vibrant and thriving university. We are proud of the important contributions that international scholars and students have made to Georgia State, and we look forward to their continued contributions.
