Faculty Mentoring Program Celebrates a Successful Fall Semester

This semester, the Office of International Initiatives and the Department of Biology hosted two scholars from Southwest Jiaotong University: Dr. Wanjun Wang and Mr. Jian Wu.

Dr. Wang faculty mentor was Dr. Frank Cruz, while Mr. Wu was paired with Dr. Mathew Brewer.  During their time in the Faculty Mentoring Program, both scholars participated in various academic and cross-cultural activities with Georgia State faculty and students in and outside the classroom.  The scholars observed Biology courses and worked with students in the Synthetic Biology Club/iGEM.  In addition, Dr. Wang presented their work on “Evolutionary Patterns” and “Species Interactions” to Georgia State students, while also providing information on Southwest Jiaotong University and the city of Chengdu.

In addition to their academic work, the scholars also cheered on the Panthers at home football games with students and visited several local tourist and historical sites, such as Atlanta Botanical Gardens and the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site.  The scholars also traveled throughout the northeast U.S. visiting Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C.
