International Education Awards
Since 2012, the International Education Awards have recognized outstanding faculty, staff and students for their commitment to international education. Awards are given during the annual International Honorary Reception during International Education Week in November. In 2018, the Sheth Awards were established to recognize one distinguished faculty member and one exceptional international alum for their achievements.
Award recipients will be honored at the invitation-only International Honorary Reception in November 2024.

Awards Endowed by Dr. Jagdish Sheth
The Sheth International Alumni Award for Exceptional Achievement recognizes a Georgia State University international alum who’s garnered an exemplary and longstanding professional reputation of achievement worldwide. In 2018, Associate Provost for International Initiatives, Dr. Wolfgang F. Schlör, established the honor with an endowment from Dr. Jagdish and Mrs. Madhuri Sheth.
One award will be presented each year at the annual International Honorary Reception during International Education Week. The award covers accommodations and travel for the recipient to attend the recognition ceremony at Georgia State. Nominators must be affiliated with the university (i.e. faculty, staff or students) to submit an award nomination.

Nomination Criteria
- Is a current full-time faculty member at Georgia State University or Georgia State Perimeter College who has held faculty status for at least five years.
- Has a significant record of achievement and recognition for international work at the university that inspires students, faculty and staff.
- Has produced contributions to humanity, science, art or human welfare that have made a positive impact internationally.
Faculty Nominee Example
- Faculty nominee mentored international students at Georgia State who have international leadership roles.
- Faculty nominee’s research, service or teaching created societal impact (i.e. policy changes) in another country
- Faculty nominee received international recognition for work.
Nomination Process
- Submit the nomination form, résumé/CV and two letters of support by April 5, 2024.
Stipulations
- Self-nominations will not be accepted.
- Nominators must be affiliated with Georgia State (faculty, staff or students).
- Nominators cannot nominate a single candidate for multiple International Education Awards.
- Example #1: If you nominate a faculty member for this award, you cannot nominate the faculty member for additional International Education Awards (Georgia State University Sheth International Alumni Award for Exceptional Achievement, Georgia State University Faculty Award for Global Engagement, etc.).
- Example #2: A single faculty member can be nominated for multiple International Education Awards as long as he or she is nominated by different individuals for each award.

Nomination Criteria
- Has received a degree from Georgia State University (in exceptional cases, attendance without a degree may be considered).
- Was enrolled as an international student during the time he or she was enrolled at Georgia State University (i.e. a citizen of a country other than the United States and on a visa).
- Is NOT currently a member of Georgia State University’s faculty, staff or Board of Trustees.
- Is highly distinguished in his or her business, profession or life’s work; either internationally or within the home country.
- Has a significant record of achievement and recognition for international work that inspires students, faculty and staff.
- Has produced contributions to humanity, science, art or human welfare that have made a positive impact on citizens of his or her country or the world.
- Has life activities that reflect the importance of education received at Georgia State.
Nomination Process
- This award has a two-stage nomination process. A simple nomination form must be submitted by March 22, 2024.
- If your nominee is selected as a finalist, a résumé/CV and 2 letters of support are required by April 26, 2024, to complete the nomination.

- Nominators must be affiliated with Georgia State (faculty, staff, or students).
- Nominators cannot nominate a single candidate for multiple International Education Awards.
Award Details
- The award recipient will receive:
- A Georgia State University Sheth International Alumni Award for Exceptional Achievement.
- Accommodations and travel expenses to attend the International Honorary Reception in November at Georgia State University or a separate trip to Atlanta if reception is held virtually.
Professor Jagdish Sheth is the Charles H. Kellstadt Professor of Marketing at Emory University Goizueta Business School.
He is known nationally and internationally for his scholarly contributions in consumer behavior, relationship marketing, competitive strategy and geopolitical analysis. Professor Sheth has over 50 years of combined experience in teaching and research at the University of Southern California, the University of Illinois, Columbia University, MIT and Emory University. Throughout his career, Professor Sheth has offered hundreds of presentations in at least 20 countries. He has also provided consulting for numerous companies in the United States, Europe and Asia. His client list includes AT&T, BellSouth, Cox Communications, Delta, Ernst & Young, Ford, GE, Lucent Technologies, Motorola, Nortel, Pillsbury, Sprint, Square D, 3M, Whirlpool and others. Professor Sheth has also served on the Board of Directors of several public companies including Norstan, Cryo-Cell International and Wipro Limited.
Professor Sheth’s accolades include “Outstanding Marketing Educator,” an award presented by the Academy of Marketing Science and the “Outstanding Educator” award twice presented by Sales and Marketing Executives International. Professor Sheth is also the recipient of all four top awards given by the American Marketing Association: the Richard D. Irwin Distinguished Marketing Educator Award, the Charles Coolidge Parlin Award, the P.D. Converse Award for outstanding contributions to theory in marketing and the William Wilkie Award for marketing for a better society.
Professor Sheth is a Distinguished Fellow of the Academy of Marketing Science, Fellow of the American Psychological Association (APA) and a recipient of a Distinguished Fellow award from the International Engineering Consortium. He has authored or co-authored several hundreds of articles and several books including Clients for Life, Tectonic Shift, Firms of Endearment, Chindia Rising, The 4 As of Marketing, Breakout Strategies for Emerging Markets and most recently, The Sustainability Edge.

International Education Awards
The Faculty Award for Global Engagement – Teaching, Service, & Outreach honors and recognizes outstanding service accomplishments and contributions to global engagement by Georgia State University faculty. This award is sponsored by the Office of International Initiatives and the awardee receives $500 towards academic research or travel.
Consideration for this award shall be given to current Georgia State faculty who:
- Have a demonstrated track record of global engagement in teaching, service and outreach at Georgia State University.
- Examples include: acting as a study abroad program director or supporting study abroad in some way, implementing virtual exchange or increasing awareness of it on campus, curricular innovation, pedagogy, community outreach, committee leadership and international student engagement.
- Have made exemplary contributions to the global engagement of the university and its faculty, staff, students and alumni; to the understanding of global and international affairs; and/or to international communities and stakeholders locally or abroad.
- Self-nominations will not be accepted.
- Faculty/staff can nominate a faculty member.
- Students may nominate faculty for this award if it’s for their contributions as a study abroad Program Director.
- Previous winners of this award are ineligible to be nominated again for the award for 5 years.
Preference will be given to applicants who have made contributions in more than one area of teaching, service and outreach. Applicants must have been employed full-time at Georgia State University for at least two years to be eligible for nomination.
The Faculty Award for Global Engagement – Research & Scholarship honors and recognizes outstanding academic accomplishments and contributions to global engagement by Georgia State University faculty. This award is sponsored by the Vice President of Research and Economic Development and the awardee receives $500 toward academic research or travel
Consideration for this award shall be given to current Georgia State faculty who:
- Have a demonstrated track record of global engagement in research and scholarship, which may/may not include creative or artistic work at Georgia State University.
- Examples include: international research collaborations and research on international topics.
- Have made exemplary contributions to the global engagement of the university and its faculty, staff, students and alumni; to the understanding of global and international affairs; and/or to international communities and stakeholders locally or abroad.
- Self-nominations will not be accepted.
- Faculty/staff can nominate a faculty member.
- Previous winners of this award are ineligible to be nominated again for the award for 5 years.
Preference will be given to applicants who have made contributions in more than one area of research and scholarship. Applicants must have been employed full-time at Georgia State University for at least two years to be eligible for nomination.
The Staff Award for Global Engagement honors and recognizes outstanding accomplishments and contributions to global engagement by non-academic Georgia State University staff.
Consideration for this award shall be given to a current Georgia State University staff who are full-time non-academic staff and meet one of the following:
- Have a demonstrated track record of leading and/or influencing internationalization in their unit/area and visibly contributing to global engagement at Georgia State over the past year;
- Have made exemplary contributions in furthering international and global education by initiating or supporting programs that enrich the experiences of students, faculty and fellow non-staff members on and off-campus;
- Have made contributions to international education beyond the boundary of their job duties or unit;
- Self-nominations will not be accepted.
- Faculty/staff can nominate a staff member.
- Previous winners of this award are ineligible to be nominated again for the award for five years.
Preference will be given to applicants who have made contributions in more than one area. Applicants must have been employed full-time at Georgia State University for at least two years to be eligible for nomination.
*Staff of the Office of International Initiatives are not eligible to apply or be nominated for this award. They may, however, nominate staff.*
The International Undergraduate Student of the Year award aims to honor and recognize outstanding academic achievements, leadership and contributions to international understanding by a Georgia State University international student at the undergraduate level.
Consideration for this award shall be given to current undergraduate international students at Georgia State University.
Requirements:
- Are in F1 or J1 visa status and currently enrolled at Georgia State University;
- A minimum GPA of 3.5;
- One Personal Statement: a statement outlining how you personify global citizenship and inspire the same in others (please include specific examples);
- Have made significant academic achievements at Georgia State University;
- One Academic Reference: a letter from an academic professor detailing significant academic achievements is required (recommender must be different than the author of the Nomination Letter);
- Have made exemplary contributions to enrich the campus culturally and further international understanding as evidenced by: leadership, extra-curricular campus activities and/or community involvement abroad or in the U.S. (such as with school programs, civic group programs, or service projects). Typically, recipients have made contributions in more than one area;
- One Nomination Letter: a letter from someone detailing these exemplary contributions is required (recommender must be different than the author of the Academic Reference);
- A current resume;
- Only international undergraduate students can apply.
- Previous winners of this award are ineligible to be nominated again for the award for 5 years.
The International Graduate Student of the Year award aims to honor and recognize outstanding achievements, leadership and contributions to international understanding by a Georgia State University international student at the graduate level.
Consideration for this award shall be given to current graduate international students at Georgia State University.
Requirements:
- Are in F1 or J1 visa status and currently enrolled at Georgia State University;
- A minimum GPA of 3.5;
- One Personal Statement: a statement outlining how you personify global citizenship and inspire the same in others (please include specific examples);
- Have made significant academic achievements at Georgia State University;
- One Academic Reference: a letter from an academic professor detailing significant academic achievements is required (recommender must be different than the author of the Nomination Letter);
- Have made exemplary contributions to enrich the campus culturally and further international understanding as evidenced by: leadership, extra-curricular campus activities and/or community involvement abroad or in the U.S. (such as with school programs, civic group programs, or service projects). Normally, recipients have made contributions in more than one area;
- One Nomination Letter: a letter from someone detailing these exemplary contributions is required (recommender must be different than the author of the Academic Reference);
- A current resume;
- Only international graduate students can apply.
- Previous winners of this award are ineligible to be nominated again for the award for 5 years.
The Study Abroad Student of the Year Award was created to recognize a study abroad student who not only benefitted greatly from their study abroad experience but who also continues to share what they learned from their experience with their GSU peers and the broader GSU community. They may do this through speaking engagements, creating videos, serving as a study abroad peer advisor, promoting study abroad on campus, developing what they learned abroad into a project or paper, etc. Nominees should be GSU students who have studied abroad for academic credit prior to spring 2024. Nominees must be degree-seeking students at the time of the nomination. Nominations are encouraged from all Georgia State University campuses: Atlanta, Alpharetta, Clarkston, Decatur, Dunwoody, and Newton.
Eligibility, criteria and nomination process:
- Nominees must have studied abroad (either on a faculty-led, exchange, direct enroll, or non-GSU program) on a credit-bearing program during their time at Georgia State University student prior to spring 2024.
- Nominees must be degree-seeking at the time of nomination.
- Nominations are confidential; however, quotations from the nomination forms will be used when the winner is honored;
- Nominations may come from any Georgia State University staff or faculty member (student nominations will not be accepted).
- Previous winners of this award are ineligible to be nominated again for the award for 5 years.
