Since 2013, Georgia State University has hosted scholars for Faculty Mentoring (FM), a professional development program designed to engage scholars from around the world in customized, field-specific, and cross-cultural activities. Visiting scholars are paired with Georgia State University faculty to engage in academic mentoring including research, teaching in a U.S. classroom, class observations, syllabi development, and course evaluation. Georgia State University faculty may also engage scholars beyond the classroom. Participants participate in cross-cultural experiences such as sporting and cultural events, visits to historical sites, and possible travel within Georgia and across the United States. Additionally, scholars have the opportunity to enhance their English language proficiency through the Intensive English Program and individual/group tutoring sessions.

Program Cost & Duration
Faculty Mentoring Lab is a professional development program that grants scholars the opportunity to delve deeper into laboratory sciences under the guidance of an experienced Georgia State University Faculty Mentor. Visiting scholars are paired with a Georgia State faculty to focus on laboratory experience, research techniques, and enhancement of knowledge in the sciences. Georgia State University faculty may also engage scholars beyond the classroom. Participants take part in cross-cultural experiences such as sporting and cultural events, visits to historical sites, and possible travel within Georgia and across the United States. Additionally, scholars have the opportunity to enhance their English language proficiency through the Intensive English Program and individual/group tutoring sessions.

Faculty Mentoring Summer, a professional development program designed to engage scholars from around the world in customized, field-specific, and cross-cultural activities during the month of July or May through July. Visiting scholars are paired with Georgia State University faculty to engage in academic mentoring including: research, class observations, syllabi development, Syllabi enhancement, and course evaluation. Georgia State University faculty may also engage scholars beyond the classroom. Participants take part in cross-cultural experiences such as sporting and cultural events, visits to historical sites. Additionally, scholars have the opportunity to enhance their English language proficiency through the Intensive English Program and individual/group tutoring sessions. The summer programs uniquely offer on-campus housing and meal plans.

Georgia State University’s Office of International Initiatives will coordinate Faculty Mentoring with the visiting scholar and/or the international institution’s relevant office and Georgia State host departments. Services include, but are not limited to:
• Two weekend excursions.
• CityPASS (Ticket book) to explore Atlanta’s attractions including The Coca-Cola Museum, and the Georgia Aquarium.
• On-Campus housing and flexible meal plan.

The Faculty Pedagogical Summer is a short-term professional development program designed to enhance participants’ “teaching” skills. In a customized course, scholars are introduced to new approaches and participate in cross-cultural activities, classroom observations, development, and redesigning of courses for feedback.

Cohort Training is a customizable professional development program for groups of scholars or staff interested in additional field-based training. Groups are paired with corresponding departments at Georgia State University based on participants’ field or topic of interest. Scholars will in engage with recognized faculty and staff to gain career-related skills. Each cohort also has the opportunity to participate in language training and cultural immersion. The program can be tailored to fit the goals, length of stay and cultural experience desired by each cohort.
Eligibility Requirements
- Be master’s, PhD, or postdoc students, hold a master’s or PhD, or be employed by an institution, company, or university coming as a cohort.
- Have an interest in learning about the U.S. educational system while collaborating on research and projects with Georgia State University faculty.
- Meet J-1 visa requirements, including English language proficiency and proof of financial support.

- Program evaluations and final program report to sponsoring institution if needed.
- Access to university resources and services including, Library, Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning & Online Education, Writing Studio, and language software.
- Visits to attractions including The Coca-Cola Museum, and the Georgia Aquarium.
Optional Services:
- Intensive English Program course(s) and weekly individual and group tutoring sessions
- Recreation Center access

Program Cost & Duration
Writing Center Cohort Training is a group oriented professional development program that allows cohorts of scholars the opportunity to dig deeper into Writing Center Administration. The program is designed for those interested in learning the fundamental theories and pedagogies in writing center administration. It is taught by the experienced and well published researchers in the Rhetoric and Composition Program at Georgia State University. The largest rhetoric and composition program in the U.S. southeast, this program offers trainees focused and expedited training as well as hands-on practice in writing center design and administration, writing program design and administration, and composition theory and pedagogy. The small group setting of the program provides trainees with plenty of opportunities to interact with the faculty and allows it to cater to the specific needs of the trainees. The program can be custom designed to address your institution’s unique context and program design contingencies.
Eligibility Requirements
- Hold a master’s or Ph.D. Master’s, Ph.D., and Postdoc students are welcome.
