How It All Began

The virtual exchange initiative commenced at Georgia State in November of 2016 when the Global Studies Institute hosted a site visit and consultation with Jon Rubin, director of the SUNY Center for Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL).

Georgia State faculty from wide-ranging disciplines who attended Rubin’s public presentation, Q &A session, and workshop on the COIL model reviewed the key stages of COIL partner development and had an opportunity to brainstorm ideas for future COIL projects. Staff members from the Office of International Initiatives (OII) were on hand to offer suggestions for potential international COIL partners for GSU faculty attendees. In the weeks following the workshop, OII staff members were then able to provide follow up support to GSU faculty who proceeded to implement COIL projects in their courses.

Since 2016, the Office of International Initiatives has continued to engage and support GSU faculty in implementing the COIL model  as well as other types of virtual exchange as a creative and innovative strategy for globalizing learning across the curriculum. Future endeavors include expanding the reach of COIL partnerships at GSU as well as offering more training and support to GSU faculty.
